Music
Intent
At Valley View we ensure that children take part in an inclusive music curriculum that will provide them with a rich musical experience. We nurture children to believe that they are musical and encourage them to develop a life long love of music. Music is a means by which they will strengthen their bond with the school and local community. Pupils will experience a broad range of styles and high quality musical experiences. They will learn how to play a range of musical instruments and will listen and respond to a variety of music styles, performers and composers. We will ensure that children have substantive knowledge of the interrelated dimensions of music.
Implementation
Music is taught through the scheme of Sing Up and lessons from the LMEP (Leeds Music Education Partnership) and Artforms. Sing Up is a detailed scheme of work that uses the Model Music Curriculum as a guidance to its content. The school also implements the guidance of the National Music Plan and Musical Development Matters in its consideration of the structure of the music curriculum and wider music provision. Lessons are structured to ensure that new learning is based upon prior understanding and the cyclical build-up of knowledge around the interrelated dimension of music. Children have regular opportunities to listen high quality recorded and live music.
Music lessons that focus upon musical instrument learning are taught by either school staff or specialist staff from Artforms. The structure of these sessions are based on the colour awards designed by LMEP. There are regular whole school singing lessons and regular opportunities for children to perform using their musical skills.
